The things
of the watery world; fish, water plants, the oceans, lakes
and rivers have always drawn me and here is my fish page.
I used to like fishing, but, since I became a diver, it has
lost much of its enjoyment. In other times, Ted and I enjoyed
drift-fishing, in West Galveston Bay for gaff tops and the
occasional red fish. We also lure fished fresh water lakes
such as Lake Sam Rayburn, Caddo Lake and Lake Houston.
I could
still fish for the table but the concept of sport-fishing
escapes me.
In
the house are six large tanks which, currently, house
varied Malawi cichlids. At one time, I was raising
lots of julies but haven’t done that for some
years. I've always had a special liking for them.
In
our living room hangs a mounted barracuda that I
caught on 12 lb. test line; in a morbid moment, I
hung him so that his jaw, full of teeth, catches
your eye, as you come in the front door!
Scuba
diving is the finest way to enjoy them; on the Great
Barrier Reef, I saw a large, splendid batfish that
I've not seen described. Its head was patterned
in black and white with undertones of pearly grey
and a large, yellow plastron covered the forward
part of its thorax. It was about five feet tall,
although size can be tricky,
at depth. It looked menacing, so I sheered off around
the bommie; that's the Australian term for
their characteristic reefs.
