Pax' Sursum Corda (Cord) was a handsome, dark red male and was developing well. As a youngster, I sent him out a bit, as his promise was evident. I even showed him as a Futurity Puppy, at the ABC National Specialty, where I was appalled to see his thinness and bad condition. The owner of his sire, from whom I'd bought his dam, lambasted me and told me how easy it should have been to handle his debilitating, and intractable, diarrhoea.

I pulled him from the show ring and took him to Texas A & M for diagnosis, prognosis and treatment They told me that he had severe, idiopathic colitis which was unamenable to treatment and, probably, had an hereditary basis. Rather than perpetuate his suffering, I had him sacrificed.

Later, having sent the full report from A & M to the breeders and receiving no kind of acknowledgement, I found out that there was a sizeable amount of this disease in their operation.

Unfortunately, our Breed is still having to combat this disease; Cord was not allowed to sire puppies and his particular gene mishap ended with him.
