When I came to the USA I thought that I was a pretty smart young woman; not so, as events soon showed me. First, I tipped a porter with five nickels .. having no clue as to the value of the currency. He was so nice, but, I was much embarrassed when he returned it to me. Then, on the train from Penn Sta. to Cincinnati I met a woman who invited me to stay with her over the night, it being Labor Day. It turned out that she was a madam, but, she was charming, and , finding me cool to her lifestyle, was most helpful in taking me to the dorm, which had expected me a day earlier!
Since our school secretary was unfamiliar with USA forms, I had to take a USA history course at the Walnut Hills high school. in the evenings. It was the other side of the park from Children's Hospital, where I worked and I walked to and fro, just as I would have done at home.
One evening I met an odd looking ?dog; it was about 38" at the shoulders, had long, lightish brown hair and was insouciant. We stood and looked at each other for several mjnutes and it eventually took one more stare and walked away. Later, I realised that it was a bear. Fortunately, we'd had no fear of each other or my stay might have been closed prematurely. |
